REVIEW: STONE SOUR - S/T
By Scott Somersett

Slipknot's singer Corey Taylor and guitarist Jim Root unmasks on this self-titled album by Stone Sour. Story is that Stone Sour was the band they were involved in 1992 until 1997 when the band fell apart and they went ahead to join Slipknot. Now almost 10 years later from their original formation of the band Stone Sour releases their first record. Corey Taylor and Jim Root are united with Josh Rand (Guitar), Shawn Economaki (Bass), and Joes Ekman (drums) to create this hard rock/metal album as Stone Sour. Their music is aggressive and powerful nu-metal but less intense than Slipknot. Corey Taylor's familiar screaming voice is present but that's not all he does. Their music has plenty of melody where Corey Taylor provides melodic singing. The heavy rhythmic guitars created are nice and heavy nu-metal sounds with a bit of Pantera like flavors. Openers "Get Inside," "Orchids," "Cold Reader" and "Inhale" are some good examples. On songs like "Monolith," "Blue Study" and "Take A Number" are heavy but melodic with catchy hooks and cool guitar solos and Corey Taylor's melodic singing is great on them. Speaking of melodic, "Bother" is a great mellow ballad that was also featured on the recent Spider-Man soundtrack. "Idle Hands" and "Tumult" are other cool metal songs and the final track "Omega" is a spoken word, which is very interesting. Stone Sour is an awesome metal album. Of course you Slipknot fans must get this along with the Murderdolls album (features another Slipknot member on guitar) and if you like nu-metal stuff this, this is the record for you. It's great to hear successful bands like Slipknot's members doing other things along the side and most of all these records are not like any lame ass side project but they are awesome records.
